Evaluating how the published platforms of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Republican National Committee (RNC) enable the “American Dream” depends entirely on how you define that dream.
Rather than viewing it simply as a vague ideal, researchers at Xavier University quantified it through the American Dream Composite Index (ADCI). Their data-driven model proves that the American Dream is a multifaceted sentiment built on 35 distinct dimensions that roll up into five major sub-indices.
Because the DNC and RNC platforms prioritize completely different sub-indices, neither platform holds a monopoly on the American Dream. Instead, each acts as a better enabler for different categories of the Xavier definition.

The overview below breaks down the five core pillars of the Xavier ADCI definition and maps how each party’s written platform philosophy targets those specific dimensions.
1. Personal Well-Being: (The largest driver of ADCI): Health, contentment, leisure, family support, and happiness.
DNC - Prioritizes expanding healthcare access (ACA), protecting reproductive rights, and mandating paid family leave.
RNC - Prioritizes traditional family structures, school choice to give parents control, and the removal of federal mandates from healthcare.
2. Personal Economy: Job characteristics, homeownership, and financial security.
DNC - Emphasizes raising the minimum wage, strengthening labor unions, and providing federal housing subsidies.
RNC - Emphasizes deregulation, sweeping tax cuts, domestic energy production, and inflation reduction to spur job growth.
3. Trust in Institutions: Confidence in government, justice, civic systems, and safety.
DNC - Focuses on expanding voting rights, reforming the justice system, and implementing gun control to increase community safety.
RNC - Focuses on strict border security, backing law enforcement, reducing the size of the federal “deep state,” and judicial conservatism.
4. Attitudes Towards Diversity: Acceptance, equity, and inclusion across different creeds, races, and backgrounds.
DNC - Expressly prioritizes civil rights protections, closing systemic wealth gaps, and codifying protections for marginalized groups.
RNC - Emphasizes a colorblind meritocracy, individual freedom, and pushes back against institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mandates.
5. Physical Environment: Environmental quality, clean energy, and local infrastructure.
DNC - Commits heavily to green energy transitions, strict EPA regulations, and climate change mitigation.
RNC - Focuses on energy independence through fossil fuels, deregulation to accelerate infrastructure development, and localized land use.
Which Platform Better Enables the Dream?
According to the Xavier research, the sub-indices are “unevenly balanced” in the minds of everyday citizens. Personal Well-Being is statistically the heaviest driver of a high American Dream score, closely followed by the Personal Economy.
Because of this, whether the DNC or RNC platform is “more likely” to help citizens achieve the dream depends on a voter’s individual philosophy on how those top two pillars are achieved:
The Case for the DNC Platform
If a citizen defines the American Dream through the lens of security, equity, and quality of life (the DNC’s strength), this platform is more likely to enable it. By directly targeting the Personal Well-Being, Diversity, and Environment sub-indices, the DNC aims to establish a high baseline of institutional support—such as lower healthcare costs and protected civil liberties—which Xavier’s research correlates with personal peace of mind and family stability.
The Case for the RNC Platform
If a citizen defines the American Dream through the lens of economic mobility, self-determination, and institutional trust (the RNC’s strength), their platform is more likely to enable it. By focusing heavily on the Personal Economy through deregulation, tax relief, and curbing inflation, the RNC aims to maximize individual purchasing power and wealth creation. For those who believe a roaring economy and personal autonomy are the ultimate prerequisites for Personal Well-Being, the Republican platform directly addresses that catalyst.
The Statistical Reality: Xavier’s research notes that “the fundamental definition of the American Dream is people working toward and achieving a better life for their families.” Ultimately, the DNC platform seeks to achieve this by building a more resilient, equitable safety net, while the RNC platform seeks to achieve it by maximizing the economic runway for individual achievement.
